I have an 1838 Zacatecas 8 Reales that I believe is an Overweight Planchet Error. It weighs 27.48 grams—nearly half a gram over standard—but it is verified Silver by Sigma and Specific Gravity Testing – 10.33.
The diameter is just under 38mm, (shorter and thicker than other 8 Reales I have), to me, it looks like the thickness varies as you turn the coin.
The edge design is present under the date but missing on the top, I’m guessing the coin didn’t flatten out in the press, and that part of the design was not stamped?? This could explain the thickness variation I am seeing.
All “Cs” are inline around the rim and appears to overlap at least once, can’t tell on the opposite side.
Coin appears to be cleaned. VF- Details?
