The 1981-S Susan B. Anthony dollar was struck as a proof at San Francisco with a mintage of 4,063,083, and the Type 1 designation refers to the mintmark: a filled, rounded S punch used for most of the year before a clearer, sharply defined Type 2 punch appeared late in production. Type 1 is the common one and accounts for the great majority of that figure, while the Type 2 is the scarce variety collectors pay for. Frank Gasparro's obverse portrait of Susan B. Anthony sits inside an eleven-sided inner border, and the reverse is his Apollo 11 eagle, olive branch in talons, alighting on the Moon. The planchet is copper-nickel clad over pure copper, 8.1 grams and 26.5 millimetres, with no precious metal in it.
Deep Cameo says less about rarity here than it would on an older proof. By 1981 the Mint frosted its proof dies deliberately, so heavy contrast was the intended product rather than an accident of early die state. It still means something on copper-nickel, an alloy that accepts frost grudgingly and loses it quickly under press pressure, so full DCAM across both sides of a clad proof this late marks an early impression from a well-maintained die pair.
Discover an exceptional piece of American numismatic history with this 1981-S Susan B. Anthony $1 Type 1 Proof coin. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin represents the iconic yet short-lived Susan B. Anthony dollar series, introduced to honor the pioneering women's suffrage leader. The 1981-S proof issues are highly sought after by collectors, particularly for their 'Type 1' (often referred to as 'flat S') mint mark variety, distinguishing them from the later 'Type 2' varieties of the same year.
This particular specimen has been professionally graded by PCI, receiving the highest possible designation for a proof coin: PR70 DCAM (Deep Cameo). A PR70 grade indicates a perfect coin, free of any post-production imperfections at 5x magnification, while the DCAM designation signifies exceptionally strong frosted devices contrasting sharply with deeply mirrored fields. Such a pristine condition, coupled with the distinctive Type 1 mint mark, makes this a truly remarkable and desirable addition for any serious collector of modern U.S. coinage or graded proofs, offering both historical significance and numismatic perfection.
