🌅 A Design That Became an American Icon
Designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was introduced in 1916 and struck through 1947. Liberty is shown walking toward the rising sun, draped in the American flag and carrying laurel and oak branches—symbols associated with prosperity and strength.
🦅 The reverse features a powerful American eagle perched on a rocky outcrop, with a pine branch growing from the rock. The design became so iconic that Weinman’s Walking Liberty obverse was later adapted for the American Silver Eagle, beginning in 1986.
