Sculptor Glenna Goodacre, who designed the Sacagawea obverse, was paid her $5,000 commission not in cash but in 5,000 specially struck Sacagawea dollars -- delivered to her Santa Fe studio personally by Mint Director Philip Diehl.
These coins were struck on burnished planchets with polished dies at higher pressure, giving them a proof-like finish distinct from both the regular business strikes and the Cheerios variety above. Goodacre had numbers 2003-4999 sold to the public at $200 each while keeping the remainder; today's book value runs well above that original sale price.
