The product is a 1/10th oz silver grain from the SS Tilawa shipwreck. It features actual silver shot from the wrecked ship Tilawa, making it a unique and valuable collector's item for those interested in silver bullion, maritime history, and historical artifacts of all kinds.
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy deployed several submarines to the Indian Ocean in an attempt to disrupt Allied shipping between Europe and the Dutch East Indies. Among those ships that were sunk was the SS Tilawa, an ocean liner owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. The 10,000-ton steam passenger liner was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine Matsu on November 23, 1942 while in route from Bombay, India to Durban, South Africa. In addition to 280 people killed in the attack, more than 2,300 bars of silver bullion were lost. This silver was on its way to the South African Mint where it was to be struck into coinage. Today, that silver cargo is valued at more than $43 million and was at the center of a legal battle between salvagers and the government of South Africa.
