Own a piece of wartime shipwreck history! This 1oz .999 Brittania was minted from silver salvaged from the SS Tilawa and carries the Tilawa privy mark.
SS Tilawa was an ocean liner of the British India Steam Navigation Company traveling from Bombay, India to Durban, South Africa in 1942. She was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine in November 1942 while carrying around 60 tons of silver bullion bars, making her the only passenger liner sunk during World War 2.
Divers salvaged the silver from the Indian Ocean floor in 2017, secretly recovery 98.9% of the silver bars when they located the wreck. The discovery kicked off years of legal battles that ended in 2024 when the UK Supreme Court ruled in favor of the South African government, denying a multi-million dollar salvage claim by British firm Argentum Exploration.
