The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 and designed by George T. Morgan. Produced during the height of America's silver-mining era, Morgan Dollars became closely associated with the economic expansion of the American West.
The Carson City Mint operated from 1870 to 1893 and struck silver coins using bullion sourced largely from western mining operations. Its distinctive CC mint mark remains especially popular among collectors.
The 1885-CC Morgan Dollar is notable for its relatively low original mintage. Many surviving examples were preserved in Treasury holdings and later distributed through the General Services Administration (GSA) sales of the 1970s.
VAM varieties, named after researchers Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis, identify die variations found throughout the Morgan and Peace Dollar series. These varieties provide collectors with additional opportunities to study and collect distinctive minting characteristics.
