1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar $1 - First Year of Issue - Strong AU (About Uncirculated) Details - Beautiful Choice Collectible
Updated Item Description:
A beautiful 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar, representing the highly collectible first year of issue for this iconic United States coin series. Minted in San Francisco, this piece boasts the exceptional strike quality that the "S" mint is famous for. It is safely housed in a standard 2x2 cardboard coin holder.
Grade Assessment: Based on a thorough visual inspection, this coin is in strong About Uncirculated (estimated AU-55 to AU-58) condition. It exhibits excellent detail retention across all major high points, sharp design elements, and fantastic overall eye appeal. This premium condition makes it an exceptional addition to any Morgan dollar registry or type set.
Detailed Condition & Visual Summary:
Obverse: (Front Side):
• Central Design: Features the left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat strands and cotton blossoms.
• Condition Details: Liberty’s profile is remarkably sharp. The delicate hair waves directly above and behind her ear remain fully defined and separated.
The leaves and cotton bolls on her cap show only minimal, uniform friction on the highest outer edges.
• Lettering & Rim: The legend "E • PLURIBUS • UNUM" and the 1878 date are crisply struck.
The denticles along the outer rim are completely intact and well-formed. The fields show normal, light contact marks consistent with brief handling before being preserved.
Reverse: (Back Side):
• Central Design: Features an American bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a laurel wreath.
• Condition Details: This coin features the 7 Tail Feathers variety.
The eagle displays incredible detail; individual lines on the wing feathers are fully visible right up to the tips. The breast feathers show only a tiny amount of high-point flattening from light circulation, maintaining excellent texture.
• Mint Mark & Lettering: The "S" mint mark is boldly struck and clearly visible beneath the wreath bow, centered directly above the letters "DO" in "DOLLAR". All lettering for "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" is crisp and easy to read.
