Item Description
Up for sale is an authentic 1947 Dominican Republic 25 Centavos silver coin in Very Fine (VF-30) condition.
This historic coin was minted during a fascinating numismatic period when Dominican silver coins were struck to the exact dimensions, weight, and 90% silver purity of United States Washington Quarters.
Design Details:
• Obverse (Front): Features the left-facing profile bust of Liberty wearing a stylized feathered headdress inscribed with the word "LIBERTAD" (Liberty). The profile is surrounded by the text "25 CENTAVOS" and "6¼ GRAMOS", separated by small stars, with the mint year "1947" centered at the bottom.
• Reverse (Back): Displays the Dominican Republic Coat of Arms featuring a central shield with an open Bible and cross, flanked by a laurel branch (left) and a palm frond (right). Above the shield, a ribbon reads the national motto "DIOS PATRIA LIBERTAD" (God, Homeland, Liberty), and the lower ribbon reads "REPUBLICA DOMINICANA".
Key Highlights:
• Low Mintage: Only 400,000 of these coins were ever struck in 1947, making it a great addition to any world silver coin collection.
• Great Detail: Excellent preservation for a circulated coin. "LIBERTAD" text is fully legible on the headdress. The central Bible, cross, and national motto on the reverse shield remain crisp and sharp.
• Intact Rims: Strong, full rims with complete denticles on both sides. No major rim dings, severe scratches, or gouges.
Historical Context:
During the period this coin was minted (1937–1947), the Dominican Republic did not print its own banknotes. U.S. dollars circulated as paper currency, and local Dominican coins were minted in Canada and the U.S. to the exact size, weight, and 90% silver purity of U.S. coins (making this the direct equivalent of a U.S. Washington Quarter).
