Weight and purity, or a common coin preset, -> live melt value at the current gold spot price.
Estimate only -- actual sale or purchase prices depend on the specific seller, condition, and any premium above melt value.
The raw gold content priced at spot -- the number this calculator produces. It's the floor under any negotiation, whether you're buying or selling.
What sellers actually ask: melt plus a premium covering minting, distribution, and margin. Premiums vary by product and seller -- comparing them against the same melt number is how you spot a fair deal.
Recognizable bullion usually sells near or above melt; scrap and unbranded metal usually brings somewhat below it after refining costs. Knowing melt keeps any offer honest.

About the gold melt value calculator
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams -- about 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce used for groceries. Precious metals always trade in troy ounces, and this calculator's 'oz' means troy. If you weighed your gold on a kitchen scale in regular ounces, convert to grams first for an accurate result.
Melt value is the raw metal content only -- the floor, not the price. Recognizable bullion coins usually sell above melt (buyers pay a premium for mint, condition, and liquidity), while a refiner buying scrap pays somewhat below melt to cover refining costs. Use melt as your reference point in either negotiation.
It's 22-karat by design -- alloyed with copper and silver for durability, the same standard as the historic British Sovereign and the Krugerrand. An Eagle still contains a full troy ounce of pure gold; the coin just weighs more than an ounce in total. Purer .9999 coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf or American Buffalo weigh almost exactly their gold content.
