What is a spot price?
The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of a pure metal for immediate delivery, quoted in US dollars. It is the benchmark every dealer, refiner, and marketplace seller prices from; physical coins and bars sell at spot plus a premium.
How often are these prices updated?
PeerMetals records the global spot price for gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and copper every 30 minutes, around the clock while markets are open. Each metal page charts the last 30 days of those readings.
Why does a coin cost more than the spot price?
The difference is the premium: minting, distribution, and the seller's margin. Premiums are lowest on large bars and generic rounds and highest on fractional and collectible coins. Buying from individual sellers with no retail overhead -- which is what the PeerMetals marketplace is -- keeps premiums low.
What is a troy ounce?
31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram ounce used for food. All precious metal prices are quoted per troy ounce.
