Gold has no yield, so its price is mostly a bet against the alternatives: when real interest rates fall or the dollar weakens, gold tends to rise. Central banks have been net buyers for over a decade and now absorb roughly a fifth of annual demand, jewelry takes close to half, and investment (bars, coins, ETFs) swings the rest. Mine supply adds only about 1.5% a year to the 200,000-plus tonnes already above ground, which is why supply shocks matter far less for gold than for silver or the platinum-group metals.
How the spot price is set
The number on this page comes from the over-the-counter market centred on London (the LBMA) and the COMEX futures exchange in New York, which together trade around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon US time. The LBMA also publishes a twice-daily auction benchmark, the LBMA Gold Price, that refiners and central banks settle against. Spot is always quoted in US dollars per troy ounce of .999+ fine gold.
Spot vs. what you actually pay
Dealers quote a bid (what they pay you) and an ask (what you pay them); the gap is the spread. On top of ask sits the premium -- minting, distribution and margin -- which runs a few percent on 1 oz bars and sovereign coins and much higher on fractional pieces. Selling back to a dealer usually means bid minus another cut. A peer-to-peer marketplace narrows both ends because there's no retail overhead in the middle.
Karat, fineness and melt value
24K means essentially pure (.999 or .9999). Eagles, Krugerrands and Sovereigns are 22K (.9167), alloyed with copper for durability, but they still contain a full troy ounce -- or a defined fraction -- of pure gold, and that's what melt value counts. Jewelry is usually 18K (.750), 14K (.585) or 10K (.417). Melt = spot x weight x fineness; the purity table above does that maths for a troy ounce and a gram.
Questions
Gold price FAQ.
What is the price of gold today?
The gold spot price is $4,139.10 per troy ounce ($133.08 per gram), recorded Sun, 04 Oct 2026 22:19:06 GMT. PeerMetals records the global spot price every 30 minutes, so the number on this page moves through the trading day.
What is the gold spot price?
The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of pure gold for immediate delivery. It is quoted in US dollars, set by trading on global markets (COMEX futures and the London OTC market for precious metals), and it is the benchmark every dealer, refiner, and marketplace seller prices from.
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams -- about 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce used for food. All precious metal prices, including the gold price on this page, are quoted per troy ounce.
Why do gold coins and bars cost more than spot?
The difference is the premium: minting, distribution, and the seller's margin. Premiums are lowest on large bars and generic rounds and highest on small fractional pieces and collectible coins. On PeerMetals the marketplace grid below shows each listing's asking price so you can compare it against today's spot and buy close to melt.
How often does the gold price change?
Continuously while markets are open -- roughly Sunday 6 PM to Friday 5 PM US Eastern time, with a short daily pause. The price on this page is refreshed every 30 minutes from the recorded spot feed; the chart above shows the last 30 days of those readings.
Is the gold price the same everywhere?
The spot price is global and quoted in USD, so yes -- what differs by location is the currency conversion, local taxes, and dealer premiums. Bullion in the US is generally exempt from sales tax in most states above a threshold, but check your state.
Can I buy gold at the spot price?
Rarely -- spot is the wholesale benchmark, and every physical product carries some premium. You can get closest with generic bars and rounds from individual sellers who have no retail overhead, which is exactly what the PeerMetals marketplace is built for: a flat 2.75% seller fee and no listing fees keep asking prices near melt.
How much is 14K or 18K gold worth per gram?
Multiply today's per-gram spot ($133.08) by the karat fraction: 18K is 75% gold ($99.81/g) and 14K is 58.5% ($77.85/g). The purity table on this page lists every common karat; use the scrap gold calculator to price a specific piece.
What is the gold-to-silver ratio?
How many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. Historically it has ranged from about 15 to over 120; a high ratio is often read as silver being cheap relative to gold. The live ratio is shown on this page and tracked in detail on the gold-silver ratio tool.
