1 Gram of Gold Value Chart

The gold price per gram is the spot price of gold divided by 31.1035, the number of grams in a troy ounce. Gold trades in troy ounces on world markets, but jewelry, scrap, and small bars are weighed and priced in grams, so this is the number most people actually need. The value shown is for pure 24k gold; lower karats contain proportionally less gold, so 18k is 75% of this figure, 14k is 58.3%, and 10k is 41.7%.

01

How the per-gram price is calculated

World gold markets quote one price: US dollars per troy ounce. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the price per gram is simply the spot price divided by 31.1035. There is no separate gram market and no separate gram price — every dealer, refiner and jeweler starts from the same ounce quote and does the same division. If a buyer quotes you a per-gram price well below this page, the gap is their margin, not a different market rate.

02

24k, 22k, 18k, 14k and 10k gold per gram

The figure at the top of this page is for pure 24 karat gold. Karat is a 24ths scale, so 22k is 91.7% gold, 18k is 75%, 14k is 58.3% and 10k is 41.7%. Multiply the 24k per-gram value by that percentage to get the metal value of a gram of jewelry at each karat. American Gold Eagles are 22k, most European jewelry is 18k, and most US jewelry is 14k or 10k. For a specific piece, the scrap gold calculator does this arithmetic for you.

03

Buying gold by the gram: bars versus coins

One gram bars from PAMP, Valcambi, Perth Mint and Argor-Heraeus are the most common way to buy gold in gram sizes. Because minting and packaging cost roughly the same regardless of size, premiums per gram are high on 1 gram bars — often 15 to 30 percent over melt — and fall sharply at 5, 10 and 20 grams. Fractional coins (1/10 oz is about 3.1 grams) carry similar premiums but are easier to resell. Sellers on the marketplace set their own premiums, so compare live listings against the melt value above before buying.

Common questions

About the 1 Gram of Gold

How much is a 1 Gram of Gold worth right now?

At the current gold spot price of $4,293.61/oz, the melt value of a 1 Gram of Gold (0.0321507 troy oz, .9999 fine gold (24 karat) — 1 gram = 0.03215 troy oz) is approximately $138.04. This updates continuously with the spot price above — sellers on the marketplace typically price above melt value, since the premium covers minting, distribution, and dealer margin.

Why does every listing cost more than melt value?

Melt value is the raw metal content only — what you'd get scrapping the coin. The premium above it pays for minting, distribution, and dealer margin, and on this marketplace specifically, it's set by each individual seller rather than one company's price list, so it's worth comparing a few listings rather than buying the first one you see.

What moves the price of gold?

Like any commodity, gold trades on global supply and demand — mine output and recycling on the supply side, industrial use, jewelry, and investment buying on the demand side. Short-term moves are usually driven by macro factors: interest rates, currency strength, and how much uncertainty investors are pricing into markets generally.

Is the 1 Gram of Gold a good way to buy gold?

Government-minted bullion coins like this one are legal tender, widely recognized, and easy to resell — that recognition is usually worth the modest premium over generic rounds or bars of the same weight. For buyers who want to add to a physical position gradually, one-ounce coins are also just a convenient, liquid unit size.

Why does the price on this page differ slightly from a listing's actual price?

This page shows melt value — spot price times pure metal content, recalculated on every page load. Individual seller listings add their own premium on top, and that premium (not the melt value) is what actually varies between sellers, so it's normal for listing prices below to sit above the number at the top of this page.
