History: the coin that invented the modern gold bullion market
Before the Krugerrand launched in 1967, buying investment gold generally meant bars, not coins sized for individual buyers. South Africa — then producing the majority of the world's gold — created the Krugerrand to open a retail market for it. It worked: by the late 1970s it accounted for the large majority of gold coins sold worldwide, and its 22k, 1 troy oz format became the template other countries copied for their own bullion coins in the 1980s.
