History: five centuries old, in one form or another
The first English sovereign was struck in 1489 under Henry VII, a large coin meant to project the wealth and authority of the crown. The modern sovereign most people mean today dates to an 1817 currency reform, when Britain formally moved to the gold standard — that version, and its weight, is what has continued (with interruptions) ever since.
