Perth Mint Gold Kangaroo Value Chart

The Perth Mint's flagship 1 oz gold bullion coin, launched in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget before being rebranded Kangaroo in 1990 for its standard sizes (fractional coins kept the Nugget name longer). Struck at .9999 fine gold, it competes directly with the Maple Leaf, Buffalo, and Philharmonic on purity, and is backed by the Government of Western Australia rather than Australia's federal government -- the Perth Mint is state-owned, not a national mint in the way the U.S. or Royal Canadian Mint are.

01

A state mint, not a national one

Unlike the U.S. Mint or Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint is owned by the Government of Western Australia, not Australia's federal government — a distinction that surprises some buyers but has no effect on the coin's legal-tender status or gold-purity guarantee, both of which are backed by the mint's own long operating history dating to 1899.

02

Renamed mid-series without changing the coin

The coin launched in 1986 as the "Australian Gold Nugget," featuring actual nugget images in its early years. From 1990 onward, the Perth Mint shifted the standard 1 oz and larger sizes to the current red kangaroo design and the "Kangaroo" name, while smaller fractional sizes continued using nugget-themed designs for several more years — a naming and design transition worth knowing if you come across an older "Nugget"-branded coin.

03

The world's heaviest gold coin, also a Kangaroo

In 2011, the Perth Mint struck a one-tonne, .9999 fine gold Kangaroo coin — roughly 80 cm across and worth well over $50 million at the time — as a marketing and Guinness World Record piece, not an investment product. It shares its core design lineage with the ordinary 1 oz coin this page tracks, just scaled up by a factor of about 32,000.

Common questions

About the Perth Mint Gold Kangaroo

How much is a Perth Mint Gold Kangaroo worth right now?

At the current gold spot price of $4,615.95/oz, the melt value of a Perth Mint Gold Kangaroo (1 troy oz, .9999 fine gold) is approximately $4,615.95. This updates continuously with the spot price above — sellers on the marketplace typically price above melt value, since the premium covers minting, distribution, and dealer margin.

Why does every listing cost more than melt value?

Melt value is the raw metal content only — what you'd get scrapping the coin. The premium above it pays for minting, distribution, and dealer margin, and on this marketplace specifically, it's set by each individual seller rather than one company's price list, so it's worth comparing a few listings rather than buying the first one you see.

What moves the price of gold?

Like any commodity, gold trades on global supply and demand — mine output and recycling on the supply side, industrial use, jewelry, and investment buying on the demand side. Short-term moves are usually driven by macro factors: interest rates, currency strength, and how much uncertainty investors are pricing into markets generally.

Is the Perth Mint Gold Kangaroo a good way to buy gold?

Government-minted bullion coins like this one are legal tender, widely recognized, and easy to resell — that recognition is usually worth the modest premium over generic rounds or bars of the same weight. For buyers who want to add to a physical position gradually, one-ounce coins are also just a convenient, liquid unit size.

Why does the price on this page differ slightly from a listing's actual price?

This page shows melt value — spot price times pure metal content, recalculated on every page load. Individual seller listings add their own premium on top, and that premium (not the melt value) is what actually varies between sellers, so it's normal for listing prices below to sit above the number at the top of this page.
