Australia's entry into platinum
On 18 June 1987 the Australian government approved platinum and silver coinage to follow the success of the gold Nugget launched the year before. The Perth Mint chose the koala for platinum and began striking in September 1988 in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz sizes; 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg coins were added in 1991.
