Platinum Britannia melt value tracks platinum spot price directly — this chart is the same live platinum price used to calculate the melt value above, so you can see the trend behind today's number.

Design

What is actually struck on each face, and who designed it.

Obverse

Effigy of the monarch — Jody Clark's Queen Elizabeth II through 2022, Martin Jennings' King Charles III from 2023 — with the royal titles and "100 POUNDS".

Reverse

Philip Nathan's 1987 standing Britannia: a helmeted figure in a wind-blown gown holding a trident and a shield, an olive branch in her hand and the sea behind, with "BRITANNIA", the date and "1 OZ 999.5 FINE PLATINUM". Since 2021 the fields carry the Royal Mint's radial-line and micro-text anti-counterfeiting features.

Learn more about the Platinum Britannia

01

Thirty years after the gold Britannia

The Britannia bullion series launched in gold in 1987 and silver a decade later; platinum did not arrive until 2018, when the Royal Mint added a 1 oz coin (and a 1/10 oz) to compete with the Eagle, Maple and Philharmonic. It used the same Philip Nathan Britannia the series had carried since day one.

02

The CGT advantage

Because the coin is UK legal tender, gains on it are exempt from UK capital gains tax — the same treatment as gold Sovereigns and gold Britannias. For a UK investor that can be worth more than any premium difference, which is why the Platinum Britannia dominates the UK market despite being a late arrival.

03

Security features from 2021

From the 2021 issue the bullion Britannia in all three metals gained four anti-counterfeiting features: a latent image that switches between a padlock and a trident, radial-line fields, micro-text around the rim and tincture lines in the Union flag on the shield. Earlier platinum Britannias (2018-2020) lack these and are otherwise identical in specification.

Common questions

About the Platinum Britannia

How much is a Platinum Britannia worth right now?

At the current platinum spot price of $1,778.60/oz, the melt value of a Platinum Britannia (1 troy oz, .9995 fine platinum) is approximately $1,778.60. This updates continuously with the spot price above — sellers on the marketplace typically price above melt value, since the premium covers minting, distribution, and dealer margin.

Why does every listing cost more than melt value?

Melt value is the raw metal content only — what you'd get scrapping the coin. The premium above it pays for minting, distribution, and dealer margin, and on this marketplace specifically, it's set by each individual seller rather than one company's price list, so it's worth comparing a few listings rather than buying the first one you see.

What moves the price of platinum?

Like any commodity, platinum trades on global supply and demand — mine output and recycling on the supply side, industrial use, jewelry, and investment buying on the demand side. Short-term moves are usually driven by macro factors: interest rates, currency strength, and how much uncertainty investors are pricing into markets generally.

Is the Platinum Britannia a good way to buy platinum?

Government-minted bullion coins like this one are legal tender, widely recognized, and easy to resell — that recognition is usually worth the modest premium over generic rounds or bars of the same weight. For buyers who want to add to a physical position gradually, one-ounce coins are also just a convenient, liquid unit size.

Why does the price on this page differ slightly from a listing's actual price?

This page shows melt value — spot price times pure metal content, recalculated on every page load. Individual seller listings add their own premium on top, and that premium (not the melt value) is what actually varies between sellers, so it's normal for listing prices below to sit above the number at the top of this page.
