The basics

Understanding the platinum price.

What moves the platinum price

About 40% of platinum goes into catalytic converters -- especially diesel -- so car production, emissions rules and the diesel-to-petrol shift drive demand. Jewelry, glass and chemical manufacturing take most of the rest, with investment a smaller, more volatile slice. Supply is the story on the other side: roughly 70% of mined platinum comes from South Africa, so power cuts, strikes and mine closures there move the price in a way no single country can for gold.

How the spot price is set

Platinum is quoted per troy ounce in US dollars from the London OTC market (the LBMA Platinum Price benchmark is set twice daily) and NYMEX futures in New York. It is a much thinner market than gold or silver, which is part of why daily moves are larger.

Spot vs. what you actually pay

Fewer mints strike platinum and dealer volumes are lower, so premiums on 1 oz coins tend to run higher than on gold -- often 5-10% -- and buy-back spreads are wider. Bars from major refiners are usually the cheapest way to own the metal; sovereign coins (Eagle, Maple, Kangaroo, Philharmonic, Britannia) pay for recognisability and liquidity.

Cheaper than gold, rarer than gold

Platinum is around 30 times rarer than gold in the earth's crust and traded above gold for most of 1990-2011, yet it has sat well below gold since. The difference is demand structure: gold is bought as money, platinum as an industrial input. That's why some investors watch the platinum-to-gold ratio as a long-term mean-reversion trade.

Questions

Platinum price FAQ.

What is the price of platinum today?

The platinum spot price is $1,699.70 per troy ounce ($54.65 per gram), recorded Sun, 04 Oct 2026 14:19:05 GMT. PeerMetals records the global spot price every 30 minutes, so the number on this page moves through the trading day.

What is the platinum spot price?

The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of pure platinum for immediate delivery. It is quoted in US dollars, set by trading on global markets (COMEX futures and the London OTC market for precious metals), and it is the benchmark every dealer, refiner, and marketplace seller prices from.

What is a troy ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams -- about 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce used for food. All precious metal prices, including the platinum price on this page, are quoted per troy ounce.

Why do platinum coins and bars cost more than spot?

The difference is the premium: minting, distribution, and the seller's margin. Premiums are lowest on large bars and generic rounds and highest on small fractional pieces and collectible coins. On PeerMetals the marketplace grid below shows each listing's asking price so you can compare it against today's spot and buy close to melt.

How often does the platinum price change?

Continuously while markets are open -- roughly Sunday 6 PM to Friday 5 PM US Eastern time, with a short daily pause. The price on this page is refreshed every 30 minutes from the recorded spot feed; the chart above shows the last 30 days of those readings.

Is the platinum price the same everywhere?

The spot price is global and quoted in USD, so yes -- what differs by location is the currency conversion, local taxes, and dealer premiums. Bullion in the US is generally exempt from sales tax in most states above a threshold, but check your state.

Can I buy platinum at the spot price?

Rarely -- spot is the wholesale benchmark, and every physical product carries some premium. You can get closest with generic bars and rounds from individual sellers who have no retail overhead, which is exactly what the PeerMetals marketplace is built for: a flat 2.75% seller fee and no listing fees keep asking prices near melt.

Why is platinum cheaper than gold?

Platinum is about 30x rarer than gold in the ground, but roughly 40% of demand is automotive catalytic converters, so its price tracks car production and diesel policy far more than gold does. It traded above gold for most of 1990-2011 and below it since.
