Isle of Man Platinum Noble Value Chart

The world's first platinum bullion coin. Struck for the Isle of Man by the Pobjoy Mint from 1983, four years before any national mint offered platinum, the Noble proved there was investor demand for the metal and directly prompted the Platinum Koala (1988), Platinum Maple Leaf (1988) and, eventually, the Platinum Eagle (1997). Production ended in 1989; the 1 oz coins contain .9995 fine platinum and trade today as low-premium bullion with a story attached.

01

The coin that created the platinum bullion market

Before 1983 investors who wanted platinum bought bars or ingots. The Isle of Man, a self-governing Crown dependency that issues its own coinage, commissioned the Pobjoy Mint to strike a 1 oz platinum coin as a legal-tender bullion product. It sold strongly enough that the Royal Canadian Mint and the Perth Mint both launched platinum coins in 1988.

02

Sizes and a short run

The Noble was issued in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz sizes, all .9995 fine, between 1983 and 1989. Mintages were modest and no more were struck after 1989, so supply is fixed and most coins now on the market have passed through several hands. Condition varies more than on modern bullion.

03

Buying a Noble today

Because there is no mint backing a buy-back programme and the design is unfamiliar to many dealers, Nobles often sell at lower premiums than current-issue platinum coins — a full ounce of .9995 platinum at close to melt. Check the coin's weight (31.1 g) and diameter (32.7 mm) against specification, as with any older bullion.

Common questions

About the Isle of Man Platinum Noble

How much is a Isle of Man Platinum Noble worth right now?

At the current platinum spot price of $1,771.80/oz, the melt value of a Isle of Man Platinum Noble (1 troy oz, .9995 fine platinum) is approximately $1,771.80. This updates continuously with the spot price above — sellers on the marketplace typically price above melt value, since the premium covers minting, distribution, and dealer margin.

Why does every listing cost more than melt value?

Melt value is the raw metal content only — what you'd get scrapping the coin. The premium above it pays for minting, distribution, and dealer margin, and on this marketplace specifically, it's set by each individual seller rather than one company's price list, so it's worth comparing a few listings rather than buying the first one you see.

What moves the price of platinum?

Like any commodity, platinum trades on global supply and demand — mine output and recycling on the supply side, industrial use, jewelry, and investment buying on the demand side. Short-term moves are usually driven by macro factors: interest rates, currency strength, and how much uncertainty investors are pricing into markets generally.

Is the Isle of Man Platinum Noble a good way to buy platinum?

Government-minted bullion coins like this one are legal tender, widely recognized, and easy to resell — that recognition is usually worth the modest premium over generic rounds or bars of the same weight. For buyers who want to add to a physical position gradually, one-ounce coins are also just a convenient, liquid unit size.

Why does the price on this page differ slightly from a listing's actual price?

This page shows melt value — spot price times pure metal content, recalculated on every page load. Individual seller listings add their own premium on top, and that premium (not the melt value) is what actually varies between sellers, so it's normal for listing prices below to sit above the number at the top of this page.
