Platinum Krugerrand Value Chart

A platinum version of the world's most famous gold coin, first struck in 2017 for the Krugerrand's 50th anniversary as a 1,967-piece proof and continued since in limited annual issues. It uses the original Kruger and springbok designs on 1 oz of fine platinum with a R10 face value. Mintages are a small fraction of the gold coin's, so it trades as a collectible with a bullion floor rather than as a pure bullion coin.

Historical platinum spot price

Platinum Krugerrand melt value tracks platinum spot price directly — this chart is the same live platinum price used to calculate the melt value above, so you can see the trend behind today's number.

Design

What is actually struck on each face, and who designed it.

Obverse

Otto Schultz's bearded left-facing portrait of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic, with "SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA" — the same portrait the gold Krugerrand has carried since 1967.

Reverse

Coert Steynberg's springbok antelope leaping across the veld, with "KRUGERRAND", the date, the platinum content and "R10" — unlike the gold coin, the platinum version carries a face value.

Learn more about the Platinum Krugerrand

01

1967 to 2017: half a century, then a new metal

The Krugerrand was the first modern 1 oz bullion coin when it appeared in 1967, and for fifty years it existed only in gold. For the 2017 anniversary the South African Mint produced the first silver and platinum Krugerrands: the platinum coin was a proof limited to 1,967 pieces, one for each year of the series' founding, and sold out immediately.

02

A collectible with a bullion floor

Unlike the gold Krugerrand, which is struck by the million, platinum issues have run to a few thousand pieces a year, mostly in proof finish. That keeps them priced above the coins on the rest of this page — but the platinum content is real, so the melt value shown here is the floor under whatever numismatic premium the market adds.

03

What to check when buying

Fineness has varied between issues (the 2017 anniversary proof was struck to .9999, later issues are listed at .9995), so confirm the fineness on the specific coin. Every issue has contained a full troy ounce of platinum, which is what the value chart on this page prices. Original packaging and certificate matter more for this coin than for standard bullion.

Common questions

About the Platinum Krugerrand

How much is a Platinum Krugerrand worth right now?

At the current platinum spot price of $1,778.60/oz, the melt value of a Platinum Krugerrand (1 troy oz, .9995–.9999 fine platinum (varies by issue)) is approximately $1,778.60. This updates continuously with the spot price above — sellers on the marketplace typically price above melt value, since the premium covers minting, distribution, and dealer margin.

Why does every listing cost more than melt value?

Melt value is the raw metal content only — what you'd get scrapping the coin. The premium above it pays for minting, distribution, and dealer margin, and on this marketplace specifically, it's set by each individual seller rather than one company's price list, so it's worth comparing a few listings rather than buying the first one you see.

What moves the price of platinum?

Like any commodity, platinum trades on global supply and demand — mine output and recycling on the supply side, industrial use, jewelry, and investment buying on the demand side. Short-term moves are usually driven by macro factors: interest rates, currency strength, and how much uncertainty investors are pricing into markets generally.

Is the Platinum Krugerrand a good way to buy platinum?

Government-minted bullion coins like this one are legal tender, widely recognized, and easy to resell — that recognition is usually worth the modest premium over generic rounds or bars of the same weight. For buyers who want to add to a physical position gradually, one-ounce coins are also just a convenient, liquid unit size.

Why does the price on this page differ slightly from a listing's actual price?

This page shows melt value — spot price times pure metal content, recalculated on every page load. Individual seller listings add their own premium on top, and that premium (not the melt value) is what actually varies between sellers, so it's normal for listing prices below to sit above the number at the top of this page.
