Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to sell gold coins?

For bullion coins such as American Gold Eagles, Buffalos, Maple Leafs and Krugerrands, selling directly to collectors and investors gets you a premium over spot. Coin shops pay close to melt and settle immediately. Online dealer buyback pays slightly under melt. Pawn shops and jewelry buyers usually pay scrap value, which ignores the coin premium entirely.

How much do coin shops pay for gold coins?

Around 97 to 100 percent of melt value for recognized bullion coins, and often a little over melt for Gold Eagles because they resell so easily. Pre-1933 US gold and graded coins can be worth far more than melt, so get the coin value guides or a grading opinion before accepting a melt-based offer on those.

Is it safe to sell gold coins online?

Yes, if payment is held until delivery. On PeerMetals the buyer pays up front, the funds are held while you ship with tracking and insurance, and the payout releases on delivery. That removes the risk of shipping first and chasing payment.

What does it cost to sell gold coins on PeerMetals?

Listing is free. A 2.75% platform fee applies only on a completed sale, falling to 2% for high-volume sellers. Payouts arrive in one to three days through Stripe. There are no insertion, promotion or final-value surprises.

Do I pay tax when I sell gold coins?

In the US, gains on precious metals are taxable as collectibles, and dealers must file Form 1099-B for certain bulk sales of specific coins. This page is not tax advice. Keep your purchase records and talk to a tax professional about your situation.
