Roughly half of silver demand is industrial -- solar panels, electronics, EVs, medical -- so the price answers to the manufacturing cycle as well as to investors. The other half is jewelry, silverware and investment bars and coins. Silver usually follows gold's direction but with more amplitude: the market is a small fraction of gold's size, and most supply is a by-product of copper, lead and zinc mining, so it can't respond quickly to price.
How the spot price is set
Silver trades in the same two venues as gold: London's OTC market (with the daily LBMA Silver Price benchmark) and COMEX futures in New York. Quotes are in US dollars per troy ounce of .999 fine silver, and the market runs near-continuously from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon US time.
Spot vs. what you actually pay
Because a silver coin is worth tens of dollars rather than thousands, the fixed cost of minting is a bigger share of the price: American Silver Eagles routinely carry 10-25% premiums, generic rounds and bars 3-8%, and pre-1965 junk silver often trades within a few percent of melt. Watch the spread as closely as the spot price -- on silver it is frequently the larger number.
Purity, sterling and junk silver
Bullion is .999 fine. Sterling flatware and jewelry is .925. Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and half dollars are .900 -- a dollar of face value holds 0.715 troy oz of silver, which is what the junk silver calculator prices. The purity table above converts today's spot for each grade per ounce and per gram.
Questions
Silver price FAQ.
What is the price of silver today?
The silver spot price is $60.38 per troy ounce ($1.94 per gram), recorded Sun, 04 Oct 2026 11:59:04 GMT. PeerMetals records the global spot price every 30 minutes, so the number on this page moves through the trading day.
What is the silver spot price?
The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of pure silver for immediate delivery. It is quoted in US dollars, set by trading on global markets (COMEX futures and the London OTC market for precious metals), and it is the benchmark every dealer, refiner, and marketplace seller prices from.
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams -- about 10% heavier than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce used for food. All precious metal prices, including the silver price on this page, are quoted per troy ounce.
Why do silver coins and bars cost more than spot?
The difference is the premium: minting, distribution, and the seller's margin. Premiums are lowest on large bars and generic rounds and highest on small fractional pieces and collectible coins. On PeerMetals the marketplace grid below shows each listing's asking price so you can compare it against today's spot and buy close to melt.
How often does the silver price change?
Continuously while markets are open -- roughly Sunday 6 PM to Friday 5 PM US Eastern time, with a short daily pause. The price on this page is refreshed every 30 minutes from the recorded spot feed; the chart above shows the last 30 days of those readings.
Is the silver price the same everywhere?
The spot price is global and quoted in USD, so yes -- what differs by location is the currency conversion, local taxes, and dealer premiums. Bullion in the US is generally exempt from sales tax in most states above a threshold, but check your state.
Can I buy silver at the spot price?
Rarely -- spot is the wholesale benchmark, and every physical product carries some premium. You can get closest with generic bars and rounds from individual sellers who have no retail overhead, which is exactly what the PeerMetals marketplace is built for: a flat 2.75% seller fee and no listing fees keep asking prices near melt.
How much is sterling silver worth?
Sterling is 92.5% silver, so it is worth $1.80 per gram of metal at today's spot -- before the refiner's cut. Pre-1965 US coins are 90% silver; the junk silver calculator prices a bag by face value.
Why is silver more volatile than gold?
The silver market is far smaller, and roughly half of demand is industrial (solar, electronics, medical), so it swings with both investment flows and the manufacturing cycle. That volatility is why the 30-day performance table above matters more for silver than for gold.
